Overview
Exodus 4 continues the story of Moses' divine calling at the burning bush. Despite God's assurances, Moses expresses doubt about his ability to persuade the Israelites and Pharaoh. In response, God provides Moses with miraculous signs: turning a staff into a serpent, making his hand leprous and then healing it, and the promise of turning water from the Nile into blood. When Moses expresses concern about his speaking abilities, God becomes frustrated but agrees to send Aaron, Moses' brother, to speak on his behalf. The chapter also describes a troubling incident at a lodging place where Moses' life is endangered due to his failure to circumcise his son, a requirement of the Abrahamic covenant. After this, Moses returns to Egypt with his family, ready to confront Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of bondage, fulfilling the role God has chosen for him. This chapter underscores themes of doubt, obedience, and the transformative power of trusting in God's plan.
