Overview
Exodus 5 depicts the beginning of Moses and Aaron’s efforts to free the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. They approach Pharaoh with God’s message to let the Israelite people go, but Pharaoh not only refuses but also accuses the Israelites of laziness. As a result, he increases their labor by no longer providing straw for brick-making while demanding the same daily quota of bricks. This harsh decree intensifies the Israelites’ suffering, leading them to turn against Moses and Aaron, who had promised deliverance. Moses, in turn, questions God about why He has brought trouble on His people and why He sent Moses if the situation was only going to worsen. This chapter sets the stage for the ensuing struggle for liberation, highlighting the theme of enduring faith in the face of increasing adversity.
